The image of stretching before exercise — reaching for your toes, holding a hamstring stretch — is deeply embedded in fitness culture. Research over the past two decades has complicated that picture considerably.
What static stretching does before exercise
Multiple studies, including a meta-analysis in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, have found that static stretching held for more than 60 seconds immediately before strength or power activities can temporarily reduce muscle force output and power by up to 5–10%. The effect is short-lived but real, particularly for activities like sprinting or heavy lifting.
What works better
Dynamic warm-ups — leg swings, walking lunges, arm circles, bodyweight squats — increase blood flow, raise muscle temperature, and improve range of motion without the temporary strength deficit associated with static stretching.
Where static stretching still has a place
Static stretching remains useful for improving long-term flexibility and is well-suited to cooldowns, rest days, or standalone mobility sessions — just not as the immediate lead-in to a strength or power-focused workout.
